What is the Orthodox Faith?
The Orthodox Christian faith is the original, unchanging faith of the early church, founded by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Rooted in Holy Scripture and Sacred Tradition, Orthodoxy emphasizes living a life of prayer, sacraments, and community. Through the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments), we experience God’s grace, and through ascetic practices, we grow in spiritual discipline, striving for union with God (theosis). Our faith is centered around love—of God, neighbor, and creation—and calls us to embody Christ’s light in every aspect of our lives.
What Are Our Coptic Roots?
The Coptic Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, tracing its origins back to St. Mark the Evangelist, who brought the Gospel to Egypt in the first century. The word “Coptic” simply means “Egyptian”, but today it signifies a rich spiritual heritage of deep faith, perseverance, and vibrant liturgical life. Despite centuries of persecution, the Coptic Church has remained steadfast, preserving the ancient traditions and teachings of early Christianity. Now, this faith flourishes in Uganda, connecting us to a global family rooted in love and resilience.
What Makes Us Different from Other Christians?
While we share the foundational beliefs of all Christians—faith in Jesus Christ, the Trinity, and the Resurrection—the Coptic Orthodox Church maintains the ancient traditions and liturgical practices of the early church. Our worship is deeply symbolic, rich in hymns, icons, and rituals that connect us to the heavenly realm. We also uphold the teachings of the early Church Fathers, offering a profound theological and spiritual depth. The Coptic Church emphasizes sacred continuity—remaining unchanged in doctrine since the time of the apostles, offering a timeless, living faith.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). The Coptic Orthodox Church in Uganda is part of this global calling, bringing the light of Christ to communities far and wide. We share not only the message of salvation but also the love of Christ through tangible acts of service—medical missions, education, and community development. Evangelism is not just about words; it’s about living out the Gospel through love, compassion, and unwavering faith, drawing all people to the beauty of Orthodoxy.
